Academic SnapshotA three-credit study abroad course for all majors. Can be taken as ARTH 399 or INED 390 through SUNY Fredonia. Students at other SUNY schools can easily arrange to take the course for credit.
This course will introduce students to the Renaissance visual arts and history of Italy spanning two thousand years. The course provides a thorough grounding in the major art works of painting, sculpture, architecture and the artists involved, adding the concrete dimension of direct observation and personal experience of the places and motifs that informed various art movements. The study and travel abroad includes readings, discussion, a daily journal, and a written interpretation of themes and ideas in art. Students will:
Course Syllabus Typical Itinerary
Day 1: Monday departure from Toronto to Italy (transportation from Buffalo to Toronto Airport is included)
Day 2: Arrive in Florence. Walking tour of historic Florence. GROUP DINNER Day 3: Visit Roman ruins at FIESOLE. Afternoon study of the Baptistery Mosaics, Santa Maria del Fiori, Brunelleschi's dome, optional hike up Duomo Day 4: Visit Sant’Ambrogio market for food shopping and tasting. Study sculpture at Museo del Duomo. Study Baptistery doors and “Gates of Paradise”. Late afternoon study of sculptures at Orsanmichele. Day 5: Visit the Bargello Museum, the largest collection of Renaissance sculptures. Day 6: AREZZO - Day trip by train. Study of fresco cycle Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca and 1270's crucifix by Cimabue. Picnic lunch on the renaissance wall. Day 7: Free day Day 8: Study at the Basilica Santa Maria Novella. Visit the Basilica of San Lorenzo. Late afternoon study of exterior sculptures at Orsanmichele. |

Day 9: SIENA - Day trip by regional bus to one of Italy's best preserved medieval towns. Visit Piazza del Campo, Palazzo Publico, GROUP LUNCH at Trattoria del Torre, Duomo di Siena
Day 10: Visit to the Uffizi Gallery, one of the oldest and most famous art museums for Renaissance paintings in the western world.
Day 11: Visit Church of Santa Trinita, including study of Sassetti Chapel. Visit Santa Maria del Carmine to study the Brancacci Chapel. Possible visits to: Santissima Annunziata, Brunelleschi's famous Ospedale degli Innocenti, and the Convent of San Marco.
Day 12: Visit I Mosaici di Lastrucci workshop for mosaic demonstrations. Afternoon visit of Basilica of Santa Croce to study Michelangelo’s Tomb and Brunelleschi’s Pazzi Chapel. Late afternoon visit to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte to visit the Romanesque Basilica, hear Gregorian chants, and enjoy the vistas overlooking Florence.
Day 13: Free Day
Day 14: CINQUE TERRE - Travel by train to the UNESCO site for hiking and relaxing on the beach along the Mediterranean Sea.
Day 15: CINQUE TERRE - Optional hiking, relaxing on the beach, early evening return to Florence
Day 16: Return - Florence to Toronto, Private bus to Buffalo
