AcademicsBefore the trip, each student needs to do some preparation in order to fully appreciate and learn from the experience abroad.
1. There are excellent video resources available at Smarthistory and the Khan Academy. See a few video links on this page. 2. There will be 3 to 4 pre-trip classes. These are mandatory unless you are at another SUNY school. Non-Fredonia students please contact Peter Tucker for academic preparation. 3. Consider watching PBS Series: The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance (4 videos) for an understanding of the history and context of the Renaissance. The Netflix series: Medici: Master's of Florence is a bit more captivating (but less historically accurate). Pre-Trip PresentationsWe will view these during pre-trip classes.

Travel Tips
Packing and Trip Preparation Essentials - A checklist. Also see: Tips for Easy Travel from Stephanie Willis (2015 trip), an amazing document created for participants by Stephanie. (Stephanie also provided many of the images on this site.)
Money - good article by Rick Steves: Cash and Currency Tips for Europe. Check with your bank about international use rates (M&T bank has extraordinary fees).
Phone: International Data can be expensive, unless you sign up for an international data plan before the trip. You can avoid data charges by only using wifi on the trip (it is often available, and you will have wifi in your housing), but make sure to turn off data roaming. Contact your service provider to clarify International fees. You can also use apps to help. What'sApp is a good app for free texting via wifi. Pinger allows you to create a phone number with any area code, and you can receive incoming calls for free if using wifi (outgoing calls are not free). Pinger also provides free texting. If you want to add Pinger, please do this while you are still in the U.S. Many of us use Facebook, and Messenger is a good way to keep in touch for free (if you use wifi, not data).
